Opportunities for Involvement in Residence Life

Leadership Positions

The Department of Residence Life provides residents with the opportunity for leadership through a variety of positions. The Resident Assistant, Desk Assistant, and Executive Board Members of RSA are examples of student positions available in Residence Life.

Resident Student Association (RSA)

RSA is an ongoing organization formed to serve as a liaison between resident students and the Departments of Residence Life and Housing Operations, and to provide leadership opportunities for residents. RSA has an executive board consisting of a President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, and National Communications Chair (NCC). Each year the Executive Board appoints two additional Executive Board positions: SG liaison and RA liaison. This group is open to and welcomes anyone who resides in the residential communities. RSA also serves as a sounding board for student concerns, issues, and ideas for improving the residential communities in which they reside. To increase representation in the residential communities, individual area councils have been established to better represent resident needs. A three member Area Council will represent each area at RSA meetings. For more information about how to get involved in RSA, contact your RA, your Area Coordinator, or the Department of Residence Life at 620-4663.

Resident Assistants

Resident Assistants (RAs) are full-time UNF students who are responsible for overseeing the development of their specific floor or building. The Resident Assistants are carefully selected as representatives of the Department of Residence Life, and are chosen for their leadership skills, willingness to assist their fellow students, abilities as a role model, and for their maturity level. The RA’s primary goal is to assist their fellow students in their community to develop a positive learning environment, supportive of the diversity that each member represents, and to the personal growth of all residents within their community. The RA staff assists the Director and Area Coordinators in developing the community, communicating important information, advising, encouraging the development of leadership skills, forming a “community environment,” providing social and developmental programs, enforcing policies, and maintaining an atmosphere conducive to academic pursuits. The RA is a role model serving as a resource for the University community and is supportive of individuals in times of emergency.

Duty Responsibilities: Each weeknight and every weekend, there is an RA on duty for each complex within the residential community. This staff member is responsible for walking through the community and responding to calls dispatched from the Welcome Desk and the University Police Department (UPD).

For more information about how to get involved contact your RA, your Area Coordinator, or the Department of Residence Life at 620-4663.
